Spring 2020 Career & Internship Fair Review

The University Career Center hosted their annual Spring Career & Internship Fair on Friday, February 14th from 10am - 2pm in the Student Activity Center. Over 150 employers attended including Spectrum, Vanguard, Belk, Fastenal, Compass Group, and Honeywell.

We are proud of the work our Belk College of Business Alumni (in bold below) are doing and were excited to see them back on campus recruiting!

The Gap-Financial Literacy Workshop Hosted by a Belk College Senior!

"The Gap" will be a panel-based discussion that will shed light on the racial wage gap and ways to combat it. Panelists will consist of Christian counselors and financial professionals who will help students recognize how their mental health affects their financial behaviors. This event will take place on the evening of March 17th, 2020, from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Lucas Room - Cone Center.

All students are welcomed and encouraged to attend this event because they will be able to leave with knowledge on how to access spiritual counseling, mental health, and financial literacy resources, along with what to do with those resources. It is also important for students to understand how their behaviors affect not only their financial futures but the futures of others as well.

Welcome Amanda McKnight!

We are excited to welcome Amanda McKnight to the Niblock Student Center team as an Assistant Director of Academic and Career Coaching!  She will serve as an Academic and Career Coach for pre-business, finance, Business Honor's, and Belk Scholars students.

Amanda joins us from the Honors College at the University of South Carolina where she served as an Academic Advisor and Events Coordinator. She graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University and her Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 

She is a proud Charlottean and is excited to be back home in the Queen City!

Her first day was January 27th (celebrated with a team lunch in the Gold Room) and she will start seeing students in late February!

BLC Visits AvidXchange

On Friday, January 24 the Business Learning Community went to AvidXchange to learn about financial technology and entrepreneurship. After taking a tour of the facility, the Business Learning Community students spent time with co-founder and UNC Charlotte alumnus, Chris Elmore ('93). Elmore provided an overview of the process for creating the product that ultimately launched AvidXchange, a $2B company that has had a $35M impact on the city of Charlotte. He also shared the following take-aways with students:

• Surround yourself with people who are going places.
• Simplicity is valuable.
• Good entrepreneurs aren’t risk takers… they’re good at managing uncertainty.
• Luck is when opportunity meets preparedness.
• Innovation happens with something becomes better than it was before.
• Your network starts in college.

Another thing that Elmore said that was particularly important is that new college graduates face a lot of uncertainty when job searching or starting their career. He said that one way to get through the uncertainly is to lean on your skills. I challenge you to think about what skills you would lean on if you had to right now. Do you have the skills you need? If you do, great! If you think you could use development in some areas, please reach out to the Niblock Student Center. We can and want to help you!

Matt joined Northwestern Mutual in 2005 serving multiple roles in the Kansas City office including investment operations and financial management roles. Matt later relocated to Milwaukee to continue his career with Northwestern Mutual in the corporate office where he consulted and advised Managing Partners to improve performance and increase operational efficiency. In 2011, Matt relocated to Washington, D.C. to join the office’s leadership team as Chief Financial Officer. Matt returned to Milwaukee in 2014 and helped build and lead a new office and leadership support team for Northwestern Mutual. Matt has been leading the Southern Region as Vice President since 2019 where he has responsibility for the overall performance of the region.

Matt and his wife Laura, reside in Mequon, WI with their four children, Everett (7), Elizabeth (5), Henry (3), and Mae (1). Matt has an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and his graduate studies were completed at Marquette University.

Meet JELD-WEN in the Friday Building on Wednesday, February 12 from 8:30am-10:00am! Headquartered in Charlotte NC, JELD-WEN, has over $4B in revenue. The company operates more than 120 manufacturing facilities in 19 countries and has about 23,000 employees. They are actively recruiting for roles in:

• Finance

• Human Resources

• IT

• Operations (this is an area of high need)

• Sales and Marketing

Their team will be at a table on the first floor of Friday building, so drop in and learn about opportunities with JELD-WEN.

FUTURE LEADERS OF ACCOUNTING:

Later in the day on 2/12, Future Leaders of Accounting will host JELD-WEN at their meeting starting at 6:15pm. All accounting and finance students are welcome. During this meeting:

• Seniors can learn about full-time positions with JELD-WEN, make some initial introductions, and learn how to interview for a full-time position.
• Juniors can learn about a summer 2020 internship with JELD-WEN, make some initial introductions, and learn how to interview for a summer 2020 internship position.
• Sophomores and freshmen can learn about a summer 2021 internship with JELD-WEN and make some initial introductions.
