Hometown: Troutman, NC

What made you choose UNC-Charlotte as your school of choice? I chose UNC-Charlotte because they have an extraordinary business program. I had friends that have attended this university as well and they said great things about it. Wanting to stay close to home, I knew UNC-Charlotte would be the best fit for me.

What are the reasons you chose business as your major? I chose business as my major because I believe there will always be a high demand in the business industry, given the variety of career opportunities. These careers also offer more advancement than other industries. This major allows be me to put my analytical, strategic, and any other practical skills to work.

What upper level major are you pursuing? Finance, Finance Concentration

What activities and organizations are you involved in? Future Leaders of Finance and Accounting 

Please name resources and/or support that’s helped you while at UNC-Charlotte. Hire-a-Niner, DegreeWorks, scholarship opportunities, Career Fairs, Belk College of Business resources-tutoring, advising, etc.

What is the most beneficial business class that you’ve had thus far? The most beneficial business class I have had thus far was Introduction to Finance. This class set a great foundation of the basic knowledge of the finance world. Everything that I have learned in that class was taken into depth in my other finance courses. My professor was exceptional in explaining material and making sure we understand.

What are tips you would share with new transfer students to assist them with their academic and career success?Some tips I would share to assist new transfer students with their success is to make sure you know what you want to major in and stick with it. Also, it is important to continuously network and make connections with individuals. This may be through attending career fairs and events, speaking regularly with professors, seeking internship opportunities, etc. Make sure to take every chance in gaining experience in the business industry because it will only aid you later on when searching for jobs.

First Year Friday: Dave Broaddus

A big NINER NATION WELCOME to our new first year students! To help get you connected and involved, we'll be taking several Fridays this semester to highlight the first-year experience. Hear from students who started at UNC Charlotte in the Fall 2019 semester and how they rocked their first year!

First up... Dave Broaddus 

Name: Dave Broaddus  

Hometown: Akron, Ohio

Chose UNC Charlotte because... the school has a very good Business and Computer Science program and it also is in a great location in close proximity to many employers

Major: Marketing or Business Analytics and Computer Science 

Student Involvement: As a freshman I was involved in the Business Learning Community, Emerging Leaders, and Enactus as well. I am involved in many organizations such as the American Marketing Association, Association for Computing Machinery,  a Resident Advisor on the 5th floor of Levine Hall, and I am now a part of the Business Honors Program. 

Tips or things you wish you knew as a new student? As a freshman, I wish I knew more about opportunities for freshman that companies have such as freshman only internships, leadership summits, and more. I feel that as a freshman you may get the impression that internships and events are not tailored to you but there are tons of opportunities out there even for young students like freshman and sophomores. I would tell new students that they should get involved on campus early, make connections and meet people such as peers, faculty, and community leaders, they should take freshman year seriously in the classroom as it will make the rest of your college experience much easier when classes get tough, and find ways to get out of your comfort zone and do things that you wouldn't normally do before college.

Most beneficial class I've taken thus far...was ITSC 1212 which is Intro to Programming because I was unsure of how much I wanted to enter the software development realm coming into college but after taking that class I knew that I wanted to dive into Computer Science

Name a resource that's helped you be successful:  My Resident Advisor was a huge reason I was successful. He did a good job of reaching out to me and checking up on me constantly and he helped me grow as a student. The RA's on my floor was also the reason I joined Emerging Leaders which has spurred me to want to get into leadership positions on campus.

Peer Connections for Success: BUSN 1101 Requirement

The Belk College of Business requires new first year (non-transfer) students to complete BUSN 1101 Introduction to Business and Professional Development as the University's Prospect for Success Course.

This fall, over 500 students are enrolled!

In efforts to help create community and for students to learn about programs and resources in the Niblock Student Center, all students enrolled in BUSN 1101 will participate in Peer Connections for Success.

During this 45 minute virtual meeting, new students will connect with classmates and upper level business student leaders (Peer Guides and Peer Advisors) to share tips on being successful academically and professionally. You'll learn how to navigate online learning, utilize on campus resources, and meet new friends!

2020- 2021 Peer Advisors (led by Paul Holliday-Millard) in Photo 1 and
Peer Guides (led by Sarena Taylor) in Photo 2 are ready to Zoom with you!
