O4U holds an annual conference for LGBTQ+ undergraduates who are interested in pursuing careers in business. Students learn about careers in their field of choice, meet mentors who are LGBTQ+ professionals in that field, build a supportive professional network, and connect with top employers in business, such as Goldman Sachs, BCG, EY, Microsoft, and more!

To be eligible, attendees must 1) be a current undergraduate student at a college/university and 2) self-identify as LGBTQ+

Peer Advisor Spotlight: Taylor Cox

 

Hi! My name is Taylor Cox and I am a senior double majoring in Business Analytics and MIS. I am also in an Early Entry Graduate program here at the Belk College of Business. I am involved and serve on the executive board for the Business Honors and Belk Scholars Program. My advice to students is to make the most out of your four years here. Work hard and have fun while doing it. One way I was able to do this was by studying abroad in my junior year. 

The opportunities are endless and you get to choose your own path. College is all about what you make it and here in the Belk College of Business, you can do countless things that sound interesting to you personally. Step out of your comfort zone and meet someone new, you never know what may come of it!

PA's are a great way to get connected to current students who have had many of the same experiences you have. We have all taken the same classes you are in right now and have developed study habits to get through those classes. Being involved leaders means we can help connect you to organizations and resources across campus you may not have known about. Plus, we make a great resource in choosing your major and all things academics!

Lunch and Learn Recap: Authenticity in the Job Search

On Tuesday, November 17th, we had our Authenticity in the Job Search Lunch & Learn! We were so excited to have the following professionals join us for this Lunch & Learn: 

• Dr. Natasha Randle (Director of the Belk Scholars and Business Honors Programs and a Clinical Professor in the Belk College of Business)
• Dr. Janaki Gooty (Associate Professor of Management in the Belk College of Business)
• Camille Stuart (HR Business Partner for SPX Flow) 
• Mitchelle Lyle (Senior Purchasing Manager for SPX Flow)

During this event, participants received advice on how to best showcase their identity during a job interview and how to make the best first impression possible when meeting with recruiters. Panelists also spoke about how to stand out in the virtual environment while also maintaining academic obligations.

Chose UNC Charlotte because... The Belk Scholars program and the unique opportunity to earn an acclerated master's degree in a field as prominent as Business Analytics stood out to me. Also, the many networking opportunities with Charlotte companies through the BCOB 

Major: Business Analytics and Finance

Student Involvement: Class Representative on the Business Honors Program Executive Board, Student Leader for Niner United Campus Ministry, Patron Services Assistant for UREC, Sports Analytics Club, Intramural Sports

Tips or things you wish you knew as a new student? I wish I knew that the college experience would only reward me as much as I was willing to put into it. Specifically, finding clubs and organizations that I was passionate about was difficult at first, but rewarding once I was able to find a good group of people to collaborate with. In the classroom, I wish I knew that procrastination would be my worst enemy. When on campus, I wanted to go out and have fun with friends, which led to mismanagement of my free time occasionally

Most beneficial class I've taken thus far... Business Practicum, a course in the BHP curriculum which provided me with substantial knowledge about the corporate social responsibility aspect of running a business. It showed that there is more to a business than making profits and paying employees.

Name a resource that's helped you be successful: DegreeWorks, along with my Academic and Career Coach. With DegreeWorks, I was able to plan out my coursework at UNCC and determine that there was room in my schedule to pick up a second major. My ACC was also able to point me in the right direction to what specific semesters I should take certain courses, which helped free up hours in my junior and senior years at UNCC.

Lunch and Learn: Authenticity in the Job Search

 

This week, the Niblock Student Center is hosting a Lunch and Learn focused on presenting your true, authentic self in the job and internship search process. This is a great opportunity for students who may be preparing for or are already in the internship or job search. 

The theme of the Lunch and Learn is "Authenticity in the Job Search." It is being offered both virtually and in-person in FRI 302 (with a free boxed lunch for you to take with you if you come in-person).

Peer Advisor Spotlight: Amy Kidder

"Hi, my name is Amy! I’m a junior majoring in accounting and I am a Peer Advisor in the Niblock Student Center. I also currently serve as the President of Future Leaders of Accounting, an Ambassador for the Women in Business initiative, and a Class Representative, Mentor, and Ambassador for the Business Honors Program. I enjoy getting involved on campus and in my community and it has played a huge role in enjoying my college experience. If you ever have questions about how to get more involved, feel free to ask me! 

My favorite thing about the Belk College of Business is how much everyone cares about helping students be successful. Everyone is always willing to have conversations with you about their experiences and give you advice and helpful resources. They will even just listen if you feel like you need to talk. They want students to feel confident and empowered during their journey through college and into a future career. As a Peer Advisor I get to use my passion for helping others to try and do the same for students. This is why I recommend making an appointment with a Peer Advisor. All of them have had amazing experiences during college and want to help other students find ways to have similar experiences."
