Career Connection Mentoring

The Charlotte Chamber partners with an industry every year for their mentoring programs. This year, they have selected accounting as their industry of focus and UNC Charlotte has the opportunity to connect 50 students with mentors in the industry. 

The chamber’s mission is to connect, innovate and grow opportunity for all who do business in Charlotte. The Chamber is advancing the Career Connection initiative to expand opportunities for students in high-job growth sectors. We are currently seeking to expand and diversify the talent pipeline in the accounting, audit and tax segment of the professional services industry.

If you are interested in careers in accounting, audit or tax, or in the professionals services arena in general, we encourage you to apply for the Career Connection mentoring program. See below for criteria and application details.

Student Mentee Selection Criteria:

Academic Levels: College Sophomores and Juniors

GPA Requirements: 2.5 on 4.0 scale and above preferred

Career Connection Mentoring Guidelines

• Mentors and mentees are expected to meet at least 6 times between November 2017 and May 2018 (about once per month, with an option to skip a month)
• A minimum of 3 of the meetings should be in-person, and other meetings can take place via phone or video chat (e.g. Skype, Facetime etc.)

BCOB: Freshman Group Advising FAQ

All UNCC students with 29 or less earned hours are required to meet with an advisor through a group advising session.

If you are enrolled in BUSN 1101 for Fall 2017: An advising staff member will visit your BUSN 1101 class.  That will serve as your Freshman Group Advising Session and your hold will be removed. Be sure to come to class on that day as attendance will be taken. **Please note the different location from your normal classroom!

If you are NOT enrolled in BUSN 1101 for Fall 2017: You must sign up to attend a Freshman Group Advising Session offered October 16h through October 27th.  A separate email will be sent with directions on how to sign-up. After attending and participating in a session of your choice, your advising hold will be removed.

1.   I plan to change my major, do I still have to come?

Unless you change your major AND meet with your new advisor (who can remove your hold) prior to your registration time, you still need to attend. We would recommend that you attend BCOB Freshman Group Advising to be sure that your hold is removed and you are eligible to register on time. If you have changed your major out of business after September 1st, please email Ms. Pickel so we can remove you from group advising communication.

2.  This is my second year at UNCC, do I still have to come?

Yes. The University codes your status based on hours earned. All students with 29 or less earned hours (regardless of how many semesters you have been in college) are required to attend group advising.

3.  I will have more than 29 hrs with my classes this semester, do I still have to come?

Yes. You are required to come to group advising based on your currently earned hours. Classes that are in progress do not count.

4.  I attended group advising last semester, do I still have to come?

Yes. Information presented at sessions differ from year to year and semester to semester. You are required to come each semester until you have 30 or more earned hours.

5.  I already met with my advisor this semester, do I still have to come?

Yes. All students must come through group advising regardless of previous/future appointments with their academic advisor. A group session will serve as your advising appointment for the semester so it is not necessary to meet with an advisor through an appointment.

6. I want to make an appointment with my advisor to discuss registration individually. Is that allowed?

No. All students must come through group advising before scheduling an individual appointment with your advisor. Individual appointments made between now and registration will be canceled unless you have already attended group advising.

7.  I am an athlete, do I still have to come?

Yes. All students must come through group advising regardless of other connections with an academic advisor.

8.   None of these sign up times work for me, what should I do?

There are several sign up times available and notification has been sent 3-4 weeks in advance. You should adjust your schedule accordingly. If you still have problems, you must email Ms. Pickel by October 1st for assistance.

9.  I am part of BLC or BHP, do I still have to come?

Students in BLC and BHP will have group advising through their BUSN 1101 section.

10.  What happens if I don’t come to a group advising session?

Your hold will not be removed and you cannot register on time. You will have to make an individual appointment with your advisor for your hold to be removed. November 6th (a week after registration begins) will be the earliest your hold can be removed.

11.  What happens if I arrive late or need to leave group advising early?

Students arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving 10 minutes prior to the session end time will not have their hold removed and will be asked to reschedule. Each session will last 1 hour and 15 minutes. Plan your schedule accordingly.

12.  What happens if I miss the session I sign up for?

You will need to sign up for a session and attend at a later date. Students who sign up and no show twice will be asked to make an individual appointment and not have their hold removed until November 6th.

13. Why do I have to take a pre-test?

To help make sure the content of these sessions is relevant and helpful, we use these pre-test scores to evaluate learning during the session.

14. Will this pre-test count as a grade for my BUSN 1101 class?

No, the pre-test is for the Niblock Student Center assessment reasons only. It will only track your information for verification reasons and your answers will not be used for grading purposes for any class.

15. How do I access the post-test?

The link will be provided for you at the end of the Freshman Group advising session and you will have time to complete it right there in the lab.

16.  I am thinking of transferring to another institution. Do I need to come?

You should still attend group advising because we want you to be prepared to continue at UNCC.  At group advising you will get more information about exploring your major and resources about support services that may impact your decision to stay. We want to keep you on track and make sure you get the proper advising, and are therefore able to register for classes in a timely manner should you choose to stay.

What are Peer Advisors? Peer Advisors are students just like you. Comprised of Belk College of Business juniors and seniors, peer advisors assist Pre-Business Majors with their academic requirements. Peer Advisors can not only help with just academic scheduling, but are also well informed about on campus resources and activities.
