 Networking Tips

Networking Is Necessary For Career Advancement. Here's Why

Tips from a Peer Guide Tabling Event

Presented by Elmer Gbedee and Kiy Roberts

We have all probably heard before that: “Networking is the key to success.” According to BetterUp.com, networking can contribute to one’s social well-being, can boost one's professional confidence level and also leads to an exchange of ideas.

Why is all of this so important you may ask? As a student, there are some things that we must accomplish in order to make sure that we are successful during our time here at Charlotte and beyond. Networking not only helps us land potential job opportunities but it can also help prepare us for that interview process and “touch up” our communication skills.

The following can be very helpful when thinking about ways to network as a student:

Connecting with Faculty

  • Express your concerns with faculty members so that they can share their experiences and knowledge with you and possibly even help you land an internship opportunity or study abroad experiences!

Attending networking events

  • Research speakers before meeting with them so that you can have good conversation starters and find out more about their roles at their jobs.

Connecting with professionals on LinkedIN

  • This is important in case you have follow-up questions and to find out about future opportunities.

Joining groups on LinkedIN and other social networking platforms

  • This can help boost your personal brand by networking and speaking with people all over the world especially if you have similar interests.

AMA 44th International Collegiate Conference in Chicago

AMA (4 BCOB students and advisor Cindy Fox) recently traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the 44th International Collegiate American Marketing Association. This being the first in-person conference after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members were able to connect with 700 other college students from across the nation including Puerto Rico, speak with sponsors like ADP, Sherwin Williams, Marketplace Simulations, and Comcast Xfinity, and learned from keynote speakers such as the DEI superstar Roy Broderick Jr. and Global Head of B2B Marketing for TikTok, Carly Zipp Garbis.

During the conference students were able to partake in Skill-Up Stations and learn from other AMA Chapter Leaders through Chapter Leadership sessions focused on Professional Development, Fundraising, Membership, Community & Social Impact, Communication, and E-Board Leadership/Chapter Planning to learn on how to grow and improve our AMA Chapter at Charlotte.

UNC Charlotte entered many different competitions that focused on each of its members strengths and skills. Those competitions consisted of Marketing Strategy, Perfect-Pitch, Sales Pitch, and Chapter Plan. Out of all of the Chapters nationwide the University of North Carolina at Charlotte had the honor and privilege to take home the Outstanding in One Category: Chapter Planning award.
