How to use the Waitlist Feature

http://registrar.uncc.edu/waitlist

What is the Waitlist?

Feature in Banner that allows you to add yourself to a “list” for classes that are full.

Reminders:

  • If you are waitlisted, you are NOT registered for the course or guaranteed a spot.
  • Once you Register for a waitlist, you will be emailed if a seat becomes available. Your email will indicate how long you have to accept the seat.
  • You are not eligible to add your self to multiple waitlists for the same course.
  • Make sure to double check WL column, even if the class appears open.
  • You are only able to add yourself to a waitlist if the class is full and the department has made waitlist available.

How?

  1. Check the WL Rem column to make sure they are spots available on the waitlist.
  2. Copy down and then input the 5-digit CRN number into your Add Classes Worksheet on the Add/Drop/Withdraw screen on Self Service Banner.
  3. Submit the changes.
  4. You should receive the error message “Closed – X Waitlisted”.  To add yourself to the waitlist, select this option from the Action column and submit the changes again.

Registration Week Reminders

To See an Academic and Career Coach
During registration week coaches will offer drop-in availability. See our website for drop-in availability. We are experiencing high traffic so you may experience wait times.
Pre-Business students can also make an appointment with a Peer Advisor in CONNECT.
For quick questions, you can email the stadvise@uncc.edu account and your message will be forwarded to the first available coach.
If you are not able to see a coach prior to registration, utilize DegreeWorks to see your remaining course requirements and register for a full course load. A staff member will review your selections once you come in.

To Find your Registration Time/ View Holds
See Niner Central's website.
To check for holds go here: My UNCC; Banner Self Service; Student Services/Student Accounts; Registration; Check your Registration Status.
Our office cannot remove holds from Student Accounts/Financial Services, the Dean of Students Office, Parking Services, or from other academic departments. Contact them directly.

To Understand Add Errors
See Niner Central's website.
Sections may be restricted for the following reasons: Honor's section, credits earned/class, major/minor, you do not meet pre-requisites. Click on the green crn number, then course title for more information. Try an alternative course section/selection before contacting our office.
Our office cannot assist with add errors for classes in other departments. Contact them directly.

If a Class You Need is Full
Add yourself to the Waitlist and/or find an alternative class option. The last day to add/drop for Spring is January 16th. We anticipate change between now and then. Our office will evaluate courses needed for graduation (COMM 3160, MGMT 3280, etc) in January. Do NOT contact a BCOB faculty member to be added into a course-- they are not able to do so and will direct you to our office.

To Navigate the Waitlist
You are eligible to waitlist for a closed class as long as seats are available in the WL Rem Column. To do so, follow directions: Copy the green crn number; put crn number in add/drop box; submit; select waitlist from the drop down menu; submit again
Classes can appear open, but may not be if there are students in the WL Act column. Double check the WL Act column before changing sections or dropping other courses.
Our office cannot assist you if you make a mistake using the waitlist feature.

To Repeat a Course
If you are trying to add a course you have already earned credit for or are currently enrolled in, you must fill out the online repeat authorization form.

To Grade Replace
Once you have registered for the course, go here:  My UNCC; Banner Self Service; Student Services/Student Accounts; Student Records; Grade Replacement Request
More policy information here.
January 16th is the deadline for Fall courses.

To find General Education Options
If you are looking for a Writing Intensive course, do an advanced search. Highlight every subject, then select Writing Intensive as the attribute type. AMST, WMST, and AFRS courses are popular.

Reminders:

Welcome to Day 1: Student Advice to Incoming Students

Welcome to Day 1, the start of a new school year with the Belk College of Business. To start the year off strong, we asked current business students to share their best tips for new students:
  • Join a business focused organization on campus as soon as possible! This is the best way to get advice on what business classes to take and get tutoring on business classes that you find difficult. (Arjun Nag, Pre-Business, Class of 2021)
  • Don't be afraid to get to know your professor. They have your best interest in mind. Also, get to know upperclassmen as they have great advice and can become great friends, too.
  • Go and get lost on campus. That way you will learn your campus and won't get lost when it actually matters! (Ryan Croat, Pre-Accounting, Class of 2021)
  • Your next year will be decorated with a plethora of amazing experiences! However, in the flurry of excitement that is freshman year, don't forget why you came in the first place: to better yourself through education. So no matter what amazing experiences you have this year, make sure you make your priority what it should be: education... Don't waste time that could be better spend in these next four amazing years. Good luck! (Joe Mulligan, Pre-Business, Class of 2021)
  • Always look for internship opportunities and speak to other students about their internship experiences to get a better understanding of what you may want to do as a career. (Dalton Pearman, Pre-Accounting, Class of 2020)
  • Go out of your way to familiarize yourself with those around you. Make connections with people and go the extra mile to get to know those around you in class, your professors, and your Academic and Career Coach. These are the people who can help you grow as a student, but you must first establish these connections and foster them. (Makayla Craig, Pre-Accounting, Class of 2021)
  • Don't be afraid to branch out and get involved in as many opportunities as possible. It will pay off in the long run. (Chase Thompson, Pre-Business, Class of 2021)
  • The more you get acclimated with your university, college, organizations, peers and professors, the more you get out of your experience. If you are committed to being successful, professors are looking for students like you, but they won't just hold up a sign.
  • Stay on top of your work. Find a system that works for you and stick to it. You will thank yourself later when you're watching your peers frantically trying to finish a quiz just before the deadline. (Shanna Rizzo, Pre-Business, Class of 2021)
  • Don't be afraid to meet people and make friends. One of the best things a freshman can do in their first week of college, especially if they do not know anyone, is to make friends with one or two people (maybe other BCOB students!). If you have one, two, or more people going through it 'with' you, it will make the college experience much easier in the beginning. (Chris Jorgensen, Finance, Class of 2020)
Thanks to all who submitted their best advice. Along with your peers, the Niblock Student Center is here to support you. Stop by for an appointment or attend a workshop to learn additional tips and tricks. We all wish you the best start to the fall semester!

Do You Need to Repeat a Course?

Belk College of Business students must complete all business courses with a minimum grade of "C" within two attempts.

Did you fail your first attempt?

  • If you earn a "D" in a business course, you will need to retake it for a better grade. You need to fill out a Repeat Authorization Form. After it is processed, you will be notified and can sign up for the course for a second attempt.

  • If you earn an "F" in a business course, you can sign up for the course for a second attempt with no additional action.

Are you interested in using one of your two Grade Replacements when you repeat the course?

  • See our previous post about how to use a Grade Replacement HERE.

Did you fail your second attempt?

  • You will not be able to pursue a business major that requires that course. Meet with your Academic and Career Coach to discuss your options.

Freshman Group Advising FAQ

BCOB: Freshman Group Advising FAQ

All UNCC students with 29 or less earned hours are required to meet with an advisor through a group advising session.

If you are enrolled in BUSN 1101 for Fall 2017: An advising staff member will visit your BUSN 1101 class.  That will serve as your Freshman Group Advising Session and your hold will be removed. Be sure to come to class on that day as attendance will be taken. **Please note the different location from your normal classroom!

If you are NOT enrolled in BUSN 1101 for Fall 2017: You must sign up to attend a Freshman Group Advising Session offered October 16h through October 27th.  A separate email will be sent with directions on how to sign-up. After attending and participating in a session of your choice, your advising hold will be removed.

1.   I plan to change my major, do I still have to come?
Unless you change your major AND meet with your new advisor (who can remove your hold) prior to your registration time, you still need to attend. We would recommend that you attend BCOB Freshman Group Advising to be sure that your hold is removed and you are eligible to register on time. If you have changed your major out of business after September 1st, please email Ms. Pickel so we can remove you from group advising communication.
2.  This is my second year at UNCC, do I still have to come?
Yes. The University codes your status based on hours earned. All students with 29 or less earned hours (regardless of how many semesters you have been in college) are required to attend group advising.
3.  I will have more than 29 hrs with my classes this semester, do I still have to come?
Yes. You are required to come to group advising based on your currently earned hours. Classes that are in progress do not count.

4.  I attended group advising last semester, do I still have to come?
Yes. Information presented at sessions differ from year to year and semester to semester. You are required to come each semester until you have 30 or more earned hours.
5.  I already met with my advisor this semester, do I still have to come?
Yes. All students must come through group advising regardless of previous/future appointments with their academic advisor. A group session will serve as your advising appointment for the semester so it is not necessary to meet with an advisor through an appointment.
6. I want to make an appointment with my advisor to discuss registration individually. Is that allowed?
No. All students must come through group advising before scheduling an individual appointment with your advisor. Individual appointments made between now and registration will be canceled unless you have already attended group advising.
7.  I am an athlete, do I still have to come?
Yes. All students must come through group advising regardless of other connections with an academic advisor.
8.   None of these sign up times work for me, what should I do?
There are several sign up times available and notification has been sent 3-4 weeks in advance. You should adjust your schedule accordingly. If you still have problems, you must email Ms. Pickel by October 1st for assistance.
9.  I am part of BLC or BHP, do I still have to come?
Students in BLC and BHP will have group advising through their BUSN 1101 section.
10.  What happens if I don’t come to a group advising session?
Your hold will not be removed and you cannot register on time. You will have to make an individual appointment with your advisor for your hold to be removed. November 6th (a week after registration begins) will be the earliest your hold can be removed.
11.  What happens if I arrive late or need to leave group advising early?
Students arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving 10 minutes prior to the session end time will not have their hold removed and will be asked to reschedule. Each session will last 1 hour and 15 minutes. Plan your schedule accordingly.
12.  What happens if I miss the session I sign up for?
You will need to sign up for a session and attend at a later date. Students who sign up and no show twice will be asked to make an individual appointment and not have their hold removed until November 6th.

13. Why do I have to take a pre-test?
To help make sure the content of these sessions is relevant and helpful, we use these pre-test scores to evaluate learning during the session.

14. Will this pre-test count as a grade for my BUSN 1101 class?
No, the pre-test is for the Niblock Student Center assessment reasons only. It will only track your information for verification reasons and your answers will not be used for grading purposes for any class.

15. How do I access the post-test?
The link will be provided for you at the end of the Freshman Group advising session and you will have time to complete it right there in the lab.

16.  I am thinking of transferring to another institution. Do I need to come?
You should still attend group advising because we want you to be prepared to continue at UNCC.  At group advising you will get more information about exploring your major and resources about support services that may impact your decision to stay. We want to keep you on track and make sure you get the proper advising, and are therefore able to register for classes in a timely manner should you choose to stay.

For further questions or issues, please email Ms. Pickel at spickel@uncc.edu
