Are You Still Looking for Elective Course Options for Summer? Here are a Couple Relevant to Business Majors!

I'd like to draw your attention and encourage you to take one (or both!) of the I/O Psychology courses this summer:  Psych 2171 and/or Psych 3174.  I've taught them online for many years and have received feedback that they are both a lot of fun and very helpful for undergraduate students.

I would also like to highlight that in these uncertain times of employment, both of these classes are very important, particularly for undergraduate psychology students.  They provide our students with insights about the psychology of working from the perspective of individual employees, working in groups, and managers can give you a real edge in hiring.  Further, a concentration in the I/O courses we offer (of which these two are the most common) could even help you with a job in Human Resources once you graduate.

Certainly, organizations from around Charlotte strongly consider our Psychology undergrads if they've had one or more of these courses.  (Not to give you hints for the first couple of homework assignments, but you will review some of the online information about hiring undergrads with Psychology degrees and Human Resources is one of the professions delighted to hire our students with I/O Psychology background). At the very least, if you are on the job market NOW and have taken these classes you should talk about it in your cover letters and interviews.

If you have ANY questions about either the Intro to I/O Psychology Psych 2717 or Organizational Psychology Psych 3174 courses please do not hesitate to contact me, Dr. Anita Blanchard, at Alblanch@uncc.edu.

Thanks!

Dr. B

BCOB Peer Advisor WFH Playlists

What is Arjun listening to at home?

When working from home, or studying, it is important to focus and not get distracted. Keep your energy up so you can focus on the material! I have found that listening to calm music, whether it’s a new release or older, has greatly helped me with focusing on the task at hand. Sometimes I want music that is more emotional and faster for a bump up in my energy, and that can help too! Here are a few albums to take a shot at, all of these albums have a non-explicit version available:

1. Snoh Aaalegra - Ugh, those feelings again

2. The Strokes - The New Abnormal

3. The Aces - When My Heart Felt Volcanic

4. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

5. The Weeknd - After Hours

Hopefully, these albums can get you started! Be open to different genres and artists. You have a lot of time to discover new songs and albums that you never figured you would like, so be open to a new experience when listening to music.

Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions about UNC-Charlotte and the Belk College of Business, contact me at anag2@uncc.edu.

What is Zena listening to at home?

I really enjoy listening to music while I do my work. For me, it works exactly like a workout. I play upbeat music when I want to finish up some quick tasks and then I play soft slow music when I want to cool down. The rhythm keeps me focused and blocks out distractions around me. This is especially helpful when working from home.

Here are my top 5 songs:

1. Can’t Stop The Feeling (Justin Timberlake)

2. Beautiful People (Ed Sheeran ft Khalid)

3. Good life (Kehlani)

4. Dance Money (Tones and I)

5. Uptown Funk (Bruno Mars)

We Miss Campus! Here are Some of Taylor's Favorite Places.

CLT Guide (On Campus)

As a student at UNC Charlotte, the most common question I get is “What is your favorite thing about the school?” and this answer is going to change no matter who you ask. I have put together 10 of my favorite things about the campus, the students, and life as a 49er.

1. Botanical Gardens - This place is a must-see to anyone visiting. Not only do you get to see beautiful plants, but there are also some awesome benches, cute bridges, and small ponds. This is the perfect spot to get some peace and quiet or take some Instagram worthy pictures. There are also different spots all along both gardens (yes, there’s 2!) to hang up your eno and read a book.

2. The Star-Quad - The star-quad sits right in front of Halton Arena and behind Atkins library. As you walk up, you can see all the way down to the Union and if you look down there is a star on the ground. This area was designed by engineers to produce the BEST echo. Don’t believe me? Make your way to star quad and whisper “Go Niners!” to experience it yourself!

3. Area 49 - Area 49 is located in Atkins library and is open to all students and faculty. Here you have access to some of the best technology to be as creative as you want. Get out of your comfort zone to learn something new about technology by attending a workshop, learn about some great resources, 3D print, and so much more! They even have a gaming lab where you can meet up with friends and check out games, controllers, and headsets to use in the lab. To learn more about Area 49, click here.

4. The Popp Martin Student Union - This is one of the main places to be on campus! The student union has so much to do including dining, movies, and many study spaces. For Dining, the union houses dining hall “Crown Commons”, Starbucks, Wendy’s, Einstein Bro’s Bagels, Bojangles, and Bistro 49. After lunch, there’s plenty of places to shop at the book store, the campus salon, union station, and Niner Tech. We also offer an on-campus movie theatre where recently released movies are FREE for students.

5. E.P.I.C. - The EPIC building houses one of the coolest vending machines on campus. Not only can you go in and see the beautiful architecture of the building, but on the lower level, there’s a Smart Market which is a huge vending machine with sandwiches, snacks, and anything you could need for long study sessions. I definitely recommend visiting EPIC at least once during your visit to UNCC.

6. The greenway - UNCC has a greenway that cuts right through campus. This is the perfect place for a Spring stroll or bike ride. With beautiful trees and a concrete path, this is the smoothest ride you’ll get. Take time to relax, enjoy the stream, cross over bridges, and just enjoy the time in nature.

7. Student Organizations - Part of what makes UNCC special is the students! UNCC houses over 600 student organizations, so no matter what you enjoy you’ll find your perfect match! One student organization, the Campus Activity Board (CAB) plans activities all across campus. This includes paintball, classes with professional dancers, trivia, and so much more. CAB events are year-round and all on campus, so no matter what there’s easy access to something fun happening near you.

8. Hammocks - After a long stressful day of schoolwork and studying, I like taking time to relax and “smell the roses”. I can do exactly this in the hammocks all across campus. UNCC has different areas where students can lay out and relax in between classes or on a nice fall day. Sometimes I would even go in the middle of the night with my friends and we would look up at the stars and get lost in conversation.

9. Light Rail - This is one of the best benefits of UNC Charlotte. Whether you are going to NODA, Uptown, or anywhere in between, this is the perfect way to get there quickly. No parking fees, no ubering, and at no cost to the student. Just hop aboard the train at the campus station with your student ID and you are set! This is the cheapest and easiest way to get to an internship uptown or a nice restaurant with your friends.

10. University Recreation Center - This is one of the newest and coolest spots on campus. Students have free access to workout classes, different courts, and even a brand new swimming pool! There’s over 30,000 sq. feet of dedicated space just for workout equipment. One cool way to see this new gym and have fun is by participating in log rolling every Monday night.

The UNC Charlotte campus has so much to offer for students, faculty, and visitors. I am still finding cool new spots all the time. Every student has a different answer for what their favorite spot on campus is, but here are my top 10!

Balancing a Part-time Job and Academics

By Melisa Akduman-

Balancing a part-time job and managing academic coursework can be challenging at times, but also extremely rewarding. Take it from me, someone who has managed a part time job and a full course load for 3 years here at UNC Charlotte. I am thankful for the flexibility, coworkers, managers, and valuable work experience that my on campus jobs have provided me over the years. I have been able to build my resume, build valuable connections, and help pay my way through college. There have been times where I wanted to give up, feeling overwhelmed with stress, but these are the times where you will see a soar in personal growth. If you’re reading this, please consider working part time as a student. UNC Charlotte provides many opportunities such as internships, federal work study, and on campus jobs. You can even find one related to your major or career goals!

My time management and communication skills have grown immensely due to balancing work and school. It is crucial to keep up with deadlines and the syllabi in each class. Doing this makes sure that you are prioritizing assignments based on due date and time with regards to your other commitments. I like to keep a planner and write all of my deadlines in it. Find a way to stay organized and make it fun! You can color code, draw, or even create an online calendar using Google. Whatever works for you will be helpful in the long run, trust me!

You might be thinking, how on earth will I have a social life or “me” time with all of these commitments? I know I thought this at first. It’s perfectly okay to think this, as it may happen at first. It’s all about your mindset. If you are staying up to date on assignments and not procrastinating, something I’m guilty of, then you can very much have a social life, manage school, and work a part time job. If you are feeling overwhelmed, not able to finish your assignments, or getting little to no sleep, then it may be a good idea to cut back on your hours. Bottom line, school comes first. If a job is causing this to come second, then simply make adjustments. I was working 18 hours a week at my first on campus job. I found this to be way too much for what I knew I could handle, so I talked to my supervisor and we adjusted my schedule. Don’t be afraid to speak up, supervisors and managers will understand!

If you are considering working part-time while in school, I hope this helps a little. It can seem intimidating and strenuous at first, but it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made as a Niner. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at makduman@uncc.edu.
