Marketing Classes -- Putting Theory to Practice

Professor Cohen is spending the month of April inviting guest speakers to her courses so students can see how marketing works in local companies.

Students in MKTG 3110 (Marketing Concepts) have heard from the following representatives: Susan Easley from Snyder's-Lance, Stephanie True from Hendrick Automotive Group, and Breana Jones from Hissho Sushi. See what they learned from two of the professionals below.

Hendrick Automotive Group is the nation's largest privately held automotive group in the United States and currently operates with 27 brands. They pride themselves on using a servant leadership perspective and work to develop trust and confidence with the clients they work with.

Hissho Sushi has seen annual growth of 25% in the last several years. The company has 1,300 points of distribution over the US including spots at the airport and Bank of America Stadium. Students learned about sushi (did you know that 70% of what they sell is cooked?!) and how they implement a company wide marketing strategy across several locations and markets.

Students in MKTG 3221 (Consumer Behavior and Global Marketing) welcomed Michael Raffler of Kuehne & Nagel and then Guy Powell of ProRelevant.

Below, students learn about consumer behavior from Guy Powell. He quizzed students on what a customer vs shopper vs consumer was and steps of the purchase funnel. He went in depth about awareness, consideration, and purchase intent.

UCAE-Reading Day Review Sessions

Panama and Colombia: Global Marketing Practicum Spring Break Study Abroad Trip

Each year Professor Cindy Fox leads a class abroad during Spring Break.
Location changes from year to year and the 2019 trip included visits to Panama and Colombia.

Participants meet a few times during the semester and then spend the week of Spring Break traveling to various cities learning about marketing from a global perspective. Students received class credit for MKTG 3000.

Hear from Maiah Dixon (BSBA Marketing and Innovation) who participated in the trip this year.

What did you do while there?
We visited a few different businesses in Bogota and Panama city. The visits included meetings with CEO's of large corporations, small start ups, and regional offices for larger international companies. We also did a lot of sightseeing of major landmarks and monuments. In Colombia we were able to venture outside of the city to see the Salt Cathedral. It is a huge underground cathedral inside a salt mine.

What did you learn about marketing and/or business?
Marketing is different in Colombia and Panama in that they still follow many of the traditional methods of marketing with print, radio, or TV. These 3 are still king compared to social media or online methods. In the US, if your are not on social media or mobile friendly, your a basically irrelevant or will fall behind very quickly. The markets in these two countries still rely heavily on traditional marketing but there are deeper cultural influences. Everything must be uniquely Colombian or Panamanian to resonate with consumers. Companies must identify with this cultural perspective to stay relevant.

What did you do for fun?
We ate some great food. I was able to try a few traditional Colombia dishes like ajiaco. This is a cream based Colombian soup dish made with chicken, three types of potatoes, corn, avocado, and Galinsoga parviflora herb. I also had some arepas and a Colombian espresso coffee. As a group we took city tours in Botogta and Panama City, In Bogota we went to the mall and go to eat at a food court. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between our two cultures. Going to various restaurants was my favorite part. I really enjoy experiencing a culture through its food. One of my favorite days was our last day of the trip in Panama. We went to this little island of the cost of Panama City Called Isla Tobago. It was a relaxing time to hangout on the beach and enjoy the ocean. The week was so much fun, but was packed with so many activities this was a great time to enjoy a slower pace and get reflect on the trip.

How did you manage the cost of the trip?
I was able to rely on scholarship funds to cover most of my trip. I also have an on campus internship which helped to offset any other costs.

Professor Fox is already planning for next year's trip with more details coming later this summer. Now is a good time to start saving up!

AMA International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans

AMA (6 BCOB students and advisor Cindy Fox) recently traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for the 41st International Collegiate American Marketing Association Conference.
Members connected with 1,400 other college students and learned from renowned speakers, partook in marketing informational sessions, and networked with professionals and other collegiate chapters. Students were able to listen and learn from other chapter members and learn how to grow and improve our AMA chapter at UNCC.

UNCC entered one of many different competitions and were so proud to take home 2nd place for the Social Impact Video Competition. This video, created by AMA members, served as social-impact marketing produced for the “Not In My City Project” organization that raises awareness for human sex-trafficking specifically in the Charlotte area. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/MKcXtlhq2UI

When not in sessions, students were able to take advantage of exploring the beautiful city of New Orleans and enjoy classic scenes and cuisines such as the French Quarters, Jackson Square, CafĂ© du Monde, Bourbon Street, Garden District, and Lafayette Cemetery.

Hear from members who attended about their experience below. Get involved with AMA and think about attending as a UNCC representative next year!

“As a first-year participant in the AMA International Collegiate Conference, it was amazing to learn from new people and see the passion each chapter and professional had. Being part of the UNCC AMA chapter has helped me connect with other business students and build connections within the Charlotte community, but this conference allowed me to learn and meet new people who had a completely different outlook on AMA. Being surrounded by the enthusiasm of others helped our small chapter feel even more motivated to strive for more and learn what it takes to be more successful. With this experience, one is able to appreciate the ability marketers have in the world and the impact one can make in their own community, let alone our society as a whole.”  -Anuva Fellner, Sophomore

“As a first-year member of AMA, I was not too sure what I’d be getting myself into when I joined this organization. However, looking back, this organization has been the most self-rewarding and beneficial clubs due to the friendships created, knowledge learned, and memories made.  Being chosen to go to the collegiate conference in New Orleans was such an honor and will be an experience I will never forget. While on the trip, I realized how I wanted to become even more involved with AMA and hope to grow our chapter throughout the years so that other members might have the chance to experience what I have this week at the conference.” -Gabrielle Poplin Sophomore

“Traveling to New Orleans with the American Marketing Association was a truly unforgettable experience. From the Cajun cuisine to the live Jazz music all over Bourbon Street, New Orleans is a city bursting with character and culture. I really loved the historic landmarks in New Orleans such as Jackson Square and was extremely impressed by the lively nature of the town. The Marketing Conference we attended in New Orleans was also an exciting event filled with awards and valuable insight into the world of Business.” -Eddy Falls, Junior at UNC Charlotte
