Business Learning Community Students Launch Business
ANOVA | BUSINESS LEARNING COMMUNITY
Thomas Hooker (‘21), Chris Lomartire (‘21), and Burke Whaley (‘21) came to UNC Charlotte in Fall 2017 and met each other in the Business Learning Community. With their talents and passions combined, they launched a business called ANOVA. Their business creates media and marketing strategy for clients.
Each of the company's founders have a unique skill set and reason for starting ANOVA. We asked them to each share their personal vision and passion for the company.
Burke - "My vision for starting my own company is to create something meaningful and impactful that I can look back on and be proud of when I'm old. I want to be able to change the world through beautiful content and bring people together in their community."
Chris - "My passion for videography and photography has taught me so many things, brought me to
amazing places, and has allowed me to meet so many people. I fell in love with the creative process and now being able to implement it into a business is something I have always dreamed of."
Thomas - "After seeing my dad's freedom in owning his own business, it made me realize I didn't want to work for someone else to build their dreams. I wanted to work to build my own. Being able to apply my growing passion for photography and videography is truly a dream come true."

Entrepreneurial Decisions Course Offered in Fall
MGMT 4300 - Entrepreneurial Decisions | ||||||||||||||||
The course is on entrepreneurial decisions – the key dilemmas and debates faced by entrepreneurs. Students will learn about the key decisions that real entrepreneurs face in operating their ventures. A dilemma is “an argument presenting two or more equally conclusive alternatives; a choice or a situation involving choice between equally unsatisfactory alternatives; a problem seemingly incapable of a satisfactory solution”. The process of entrepreneurship involves the recognition of challenges and dilemmas, vigorous debate, and ultimately, solutions. No solution lasts long in an entrepreneurial milieu whose underpinning is “creative destruction”.

Let's talk about INTERNSHIPS!
Are you still wondering what you’re going to do with your summer? Are you ready to get a head start on your career?
The Belk College of Business offers internship for credit for students who have:
· Reached a junior or senior standing and have declared a major
· At least a 2.0 GPA
· Met the pre-requisite requirements for their major
Why would you take an internship for credit?
· Through the class, you will receive guidance from not only your supervisor but also will have faculty support within the classroom to assist with difficult workplace situations, general questions, etc. Who doesn’t want another layer of support?
· Within the discussions of the class, you will learn about what your classmates might be doing in their internship, so if your internship ends up being a career that isn’t for you, you will have many other ideas!
· Internships are usually more successful when expectations are clear, employers actively participate, interns keep a journal, and interns have some mentorship—all which can be achieved through the class!
For more information, attend an information session April 18th at 12:30pm or April 26th at 12:30pm in the Niblock Student Center flex space. You can register via the hyperlinks above.

Students Attend Women In Business Alumni Luncheon
Women in business alumni luncheon
| Women in Business
Women in Business Ambassadors and Affiliates were invited to the Belk College of Business's first Spring Women in Business Alumni Networking Luncheon. The students arrived prior to the luncheon and had the opportunity to network with many successful professionals in Charlotte.
Natalia Jenkins shared her experience and growth by being apart of the Women in Business Initiative (WIB). She specifically highlighted her time at last year's 2017 WIB Fall Retreat. "By becoming more involved with WIB, I had the opportunity to go on the fall retreat hosted in Greenville, SC. We talked about the inequalities that we face as women in the workplace and how we can combat these barriers. The most memorable activity from the retreat was working on elevator pitches. We partnered up and recorded one another. Seeing myself on camera really showed me areas that I could improve and what I was doing well", said Natalia.
After Natalia spoke, the afternoon featured a presentation by executive coach and Belk College alumna, Heidi Hansen. Heidi is a multi-lingual, with over two decades of corporate training and adult education experience specializing in developing face-to-face networking and facilitating career growth for business professionals.
Heidi's presentation was titled "Purposeful Networking: Dismantle Fear, Build Confidence, Be Effective". The topic was tailored to improve interpersonal skills for introverts in middle and executive management.
If you are interested in joining the Women in Business Initiative and attending future event such as this, make sure to check out womeninbusiess.uncc.edu.
