South Africa: Marketing in Developing Countries Study Abroad Trip

Professor Cohen will be leading another group this summer (May 18 - June 1) to South Africa. You'll visit companies including Apple and Barloworld, plus take a day trip to Cape Point and go on a safari.

More information on cost, schedule, and the application which is due this Friday, February 1st can be found here. Belk College of Business students qualify for $1,000 scholarships! You'll also receive credit for MKTG 3000.

Hear from alumni Sara Milam who was on the last trip and says, "My marketing trip to South Africa was one of the best experiences of my entire life."

What did you do while in South Africa?
"Our trip started in Johannesburg where we met with the CEO of Barloworld, the largest Caterpillar dealer in South Africa. We also visited a few different banks to learn about how they market in South Africa. Then we flew to Cape Town where we visited Table Mountain, The Cape of Good Hope, and Hamilton Russell Vineyards, among many other places. While in Cape Town we also met with the chairman of Pick'n'Pay, a huge convenient store chain in SA, as well as the general manager of the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel. Our last part of the trip was by far the most memorable, which is saying a lot because the rest of the trip was incredible. We ended our trip with a weekend stay at the Kapama Private Game Reserve. We stayed in luxury cabins and took twice daily open-top Jeep tours through the bush looking for The Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos. A few of us had the amazing opportunity to ride elephants through the bush as well."

How did you interact with the business community?
"Professor Cohen set up two different "cocktail hours" for us to mingle and practice our elevator speeches and "cocktail circuit" skills. These were attended by local business people, most of whom either owned their own large company, or were a part of the C-suite of them. When we visited Barloworld, we had tea and scones in the CEO's office. When we visited the headquarters of Pick'n'Pay, we were in a board room surrounded by all of the head people from that company, including the son of the man who founded it.

How did you manage the cost of the trip?
"This trip was so worth it to me because although we did a lot of work and had class discussions, they took place on patios of 5-star hotels and our learning was extremely hands on by visiting different businesses and learning directly from their leaders. It never felt like I was in class, and yet I learned so much and was able to experience so much that I wouldn't have been able to on my own or in a classroom. There was also plenty of free time where we could explore and go to places just for fun. We stayed in beautiful fancy hotels, and ate at some of the most amazing restaurants."
"I also loved that Professor Cohen planned this trip so well that a lot of our meals, day trips, and museums we visited were included in the cost of the trip. This made it much more affordable while we were there."
Sara ends by saying, "If you're unsure of which study abroad trip you should take this summer or you're having trouble choosing between a few options, I promise you won't regret taking this one!"

South Africa: Marketing in Developing Countries

Admitted Students Day

We had a great time at Admitted Students Day last Friday! Thanks to Ahmad Hill, Alanna Church, Adonis Abdullah and alumna Shannon Karpovich ‘11 for being apart of our panel!

Business Skills Needed Internationally

Business Skills Needed in International Humanitarian Work

Have you always wanted to apply your business skills in poorer parts of the world? We need you!
International development is shifting away from "hand-outs" to "hand-ups".
Thus business skills play an increasingly important role in international humanitarian work.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP/ SMALL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT: Rwanda, Cameroon, Kenya The focus of international development is helping people "generate income".
e.g. When I was in the remote villages of Cameroon, farmers did not have
$5 for a mosquito net to prevent malaria.
In Rwanda and in the Kibera slums and in the remote rural villages of Cameroon, the challenge is helping dream up enterprises that people with few resources can do; and then mentoring and guiding  them in the skills necessary to succeed & prosper.
It is a fascinating challenge to break entrepreneurship into the basic steps and help people out of poverty.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP/ SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Morocco & Jordan The Arab Spring of 2011 was initially inspired by the street vendor in Tunisia who set himself on fire.
Harassed by local officials, he felt he was thwarted in his effort to support his family.
It is still difficult to make a living in much of North Africa.
Morocco: Come teach youth who have gotten out of detention how to launch a small business.
Jordan: it is unusual to have such a strong women's empowerment program in the Middle East.
Come teach women how to operate small or medium size enterprises and make a living.

MICRO-FINANCE: Rwanda, Costa Rica, India, Ecuador, Lebanon Micro-finance is still an important ticket out of poverty.
The most important part of MF is not the loan but helping micro-entrepreneurs succeed.
Costa Rica has an extraordinary director: hilarious and gracious.
India is much more like the Grameen model - helping the poor in many ways.
Ecuador reflects the model that grew out of Liberation Theology: forming cooperatives.
Rwanda asks for help in Finance, IT (analyzing their database), Marketing or Operations.
Lebanon is quite sophisticated & needs help in operations, risk assessment & management, and auditing; and also would like help developing mobile app, eCommerce & Microfinance trainings.

MARKETING & FINANCE: Uganda, Nepal, Peru
Uganda: A cutting edge organization has figured out a self sustaining way to build better housing for people in the slums.
They need help with marketing & advertising: how to get the word out to the poor that this amazing option exists.
Nepal: An equally innovative renewable energy organization also needs help assessing potential markets & marketing renewable energy  to schools, NGO's, hospitals and private citizens. They also want help figuring out financing plans so ordinary Nepalis can afford renewable energy. We need you!
Peru: this organization in the Sacred Valley would like help marketing the attractions of their town so that they may attract some of the many tourists that go to Machu Picchu. Helpful to also have experience in Tourism.

ENVIRONMENTAL - ENTREPRENEURSHIP: Caribbean Vibrant & ground-breaking environmental organization that works on renewable energy, climate change.
reducing waste, and working with schools, churches and businesses adopt more environmentally friendly practices would like help for the entrepreneurs that they assist. It is hard for small businesses to succeed on the islands because there are not enough people. Help develop realistic, viable business plans; help with financials; and mentor progress.

WOMEN & MARKETING: Ecuador
Often the stumbling block for small businesses in the developing world is marketing.
In poor countries few can afford the products made so the goal becomes finding a wider market.
Or if their product would not flourish on a global market, do they need to create a service or product that will sell better locally?
Help Ecuadorian indigenous women market and sell their weavings and crafts.

SMALL BUSINESS THAT SUSTAINS NGO: Sri Lanka The Sri Lanka multi-faceted organization is run by a business man and run much like a business.
The organization was born after the tsunami hit in 2004: they have a health and dental clinic; teach "income generation" skills, computers, electrical work, hair dressing and do psycho-social work and literacy.
They market spices and have launched a diving and tourism business to fund their non-profit. Want to help?

ALTERNATIVES TO TRAFFICKING - HOSPITALITY & TOURISM: Nepal
~7,000 women & girls are trafficked from Nepal to the brothels of India per year.
Abject poverty in the remote, remote villages of Nepal make the offer of "a good job in India" very tempting.
One of the goals of this trafficking org is to teach young women English, literacy and about tourism.
Tourism is Nepal's #1 industry and their aim is to create an alternative income source for these young women.
You need not have a background in Tourism, but if you do, all the better!

Meet the Coach!
Allison Sigmon

I work with Pre-Business students, last names T-Z and students who are majoring in marketing. I have been working in the Belk College of Business for five years and enjoy working with students from freshman year through graduation.
I am a proud UNC Charlotte graduate! I earned a BS in Psychology and BA in Communication Studies. You can read more about my journey here. I graduated from Clemson University with a M.Ed in Counselor Education, Student Affairs.
I think it is really important to get involved and connected. Whether it is a business organization, Greek Life, or a service group, it's important to build your network. Not only does this allow you to build soft skills for a resume, but it connects you with people who can help you get through college life. I think it's also important to ask for help. There are so many free resources on campus, if you just seek them out. My goal as an Academic and Career coach is to make sure you are aware and take advantage of them!
I grew up in Hickory, NC and am proud of my North Carolina roots. I actually went to the same high school as country musician, Eric Church. My husband, Tyler, works in the marketing field and we have a 1 year old son named, Mac. We love spending time with friends, family, and cheering on the Clemson Tigers and Carolina Panthers!

Marketing Humor!

Marketing Majors: Ways to Study Abroad

There are many opportunities to study abroad while earning credits to stay on track for graduation. Hear from these marketing majors about their time abroad!

Olivia Enscoe (pictured below) at the Sacré-CÅ“ur Basilica in Paris, France
Studied: Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy during Spring 2018
Classes Taken: Art History, Italian, Marketing Concepts, Literature & Language, Marketing Topics Course
"Studying abroad in Florence, Italy was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I went through a tremendous amount of growth in such a short period of time, leaving me feeling more confident to enter the work force. As a marketing student, it was interesting to learn about the similarities and differences in marketing techniques that are used in various countries. In my classes, we had a very hands on approach with learning, giving us real world experience while the work we did had a direct impact on the companies we worked with. I feel that the greatest thing students can take away from studying abroad is getting new perspective; on life, how business works, culture and more, giving students an advantage above those who are exposed to the same environment and stimuli for years. Studying abroad has improved my student experience tenfold and my hope is that more students consider their opportunities outside of their university."

Maureen Sampson (pictured below) at ÄŒeský Krumlov, Czech Republic
Studied: University of Economics, Prague in Prague, Czech Republic during Spring 2018
Classes Taken: International Financial Management, Foreign Language, International Management, Marketing Topics Course
"Studying abroad has pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and has given my the ability to tackle any situation”

Ella Crosby (pictured below) at The Colosseum in Rome
Studied: Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy during Summer 2018
Classes Taken: Marketing Topics Course
'"Studying abroad is by far one of my favorite and most rewarding experiences as a student. Taking courses and living in another country encouraged me to grow and discover myself while gaining an immense appreciation for other cultures. This opportunity allowed me to continue my studies as a Marketing student and was the reason I have decided to minor in International Management. Studying abroad has definitely been one of the best decisions I have made in college and I would recommend it to everyone!"

Want to Study Abroad but not sure how to get started? Visit the Office of Education Abroad online for more information. The first step is to complete Study Abroad 101.

Additionally, the Marketing department offers faculty led trips abroad each year. Professor Fox will be leading a trip to Panama and Colombia Spring Break 2019 and Professor Cohen will leading a trip to South Africa this Summer 2019.
Recruitment for the South Africa trip is still underway! Check out more details here and submit your application by February 1st.
